Anyone planning on collecting Petoskey stones this year? Last year I found a few small ones around Lake Huron. I found way more pieces of horn coral and other corals though. I've read that the ones around Petoskey are higher quality(less soft, etc) but haven't had a chance to hunt there in many years. Might give Lake Michigan a try this year if I'm not too busy with Lake Huron and area rivers. I wonder what ever happened to my old Petoskey stones.

Do you polish your petoskey stone? I had an unpolished one from a friend.

I haven't polished any yet but I've read it is pretty easy to do even by hand. I've hand polished a couple other rocks by starting with coarse wet/dry sandpaper and working down to finer grits. I then used some polishing compound from a jewelry store. That took a long time but petoskeys are softer. I plan on trying this with some petoskeys this year.

Sounds like a great idea! I'm still waiting for the ice to melt more before heading to Petoskey to hunt for them. I've found some around where I am but not very many.
